Thelodont Scales from the Lower Devonian Red Bay Group, Spitsbergen

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Scales of nine thelodont taxa are described from the Red Bay Group of Spitsbergen, also characterized by its assemblage of other typical Early Devonian vertebrates. The four thelodont-bearing horizons of the lower Fraenkelryggen Formation yield typical Lochkovian thelodont assemblages, containing Boreania minima, Canonia grossi, Nikolivia depressa sp. nov., Nikolivia elongata, Nikolivia gutta and Turinia pagei. One horizon from the younger Ben Nevis Formation has a similar thelodont assemblage, excep… Show more

“…Thelodonts have been successfully used in biostratigraphy since the 1960's (Gross 1967) with current global zonation schemes (in Gradstein et al 2012) developed for the Silurian (Turner 1973;Bassett et al 1982;Märss et al 1995;Blom 1999;Talimaa 2000) and Devonian, (Turner 1995a(Turner , 1999Blom and Goujet 2002;Hairapetian et al, in press). Subsequent to the Givetian-Frasnian boundary, thelodonts are restricted to the margins of northern Gondwana (Turner 1997;Trinajstic 2001;Märss et al 2007) and there is a marked reduction in diversity with the Turinidae Family represented by the species Australolepis seddoni (Seddon 1969;Turner and Dring 1981;Trinajstic and George 2009), Turinia hutkensis (Blieck and Goujet 1978;Hairapetian et al 2006) and a new genus and species of turiniid (Hairapetian et al, in press).…”

“…is specimen shows a typical turiniid body scale configuration, resembling the type species. It also resembles the mid-section of body scales of other turiniid taxa such as Turinia barentsia from the Ben Nevis Formation, Red Bay Group of Spitsbergen (Blom & Goujet 2002)…”

“…ese two scales with their wide laterally expanded crown with several separate posterior points are comparable with the body scales of Turinia composita (Karatajūtė-Talimaa 2002: fig. 1G, H) and to some extent with some of Turinia barentsia Blom & Goujet, 2002(Blom & Goujet 2002). As with the other scales, the surface is severely scoured or etched and opening of dentine and bony aspidine structure can be seen.…”
