Thematic Review and Analysis of Grounded Theory Application in Software Engineering

Abstract: We present metacodes, a new concept to guide grounded theory (GT) research in software engineering. Metacodes are high level codes that can help software engineering researchers guide the data coding process. Metacodes are constructed in the course of analyzing software engineering papers that use grounded theory as a research methodology. We performed a high level analysis to discover common themes in such papers and discovered that GT had been applied primarily in three software engineering disciplines: agil… Show more

“…As the name suggests, GT approach provides a means of generating theory that is "grounded" in the data in an exploratory fashion [44]. It has been studied extensively in literature in different contexts [44][45] [46][47] [48]. GT approach allows streamlining and integrating data collection and analysis.…”

“…The state of affairs in attempts to developments of Grounded Theories in the domain of software engineering one can estimate with the use of reviews [19,20]. In the review [19] published in 2013, there are no applications of Grounded Theory to a coherent set of specialized disciplines typically implemented by designers in the development of systems with software.…”

“…In the review [19] published in 2013, there are no applications of Grounded Theory to a coherent set of specialized disciplines typically implemented by designers in the development of systems with software. Therefore, in the review, all investigated publications were separated into three areas -flexible design, distributed development and the formation of requirements.…”
