Theoretical and Experimental Investigation of Microphase Separation in Mixed Thiol Monolayers on Silver Nanoparticles

Abstract: Silver nanoparticles with mixed ligand self-assembled monolayers were synthesized from dodecanethiol and another ligand from a homologous series of alkanethiols (butanethiol, pentanethiol, heptanethiol, octanethiol, nonanethiol, decanethiol, undecanethiol, or dodecanethiol[D25]). These were hypothesized to exhibit ligand phase separation that increases with degree of physical mismatch between the ligands based on the difference in the number of carbons in the two ligands. Dodecanethiol/dodecanethiol[D25] was e… Show more

“…The distributions of different types of fragments that are generated from each molecule and its nearest neighbors are first calculated. As established previously 38 , one could assume that all the molecules on the nanoparticle surface have the same probability to be detached and form different fragments. Therefore, the fragmentation pattern from all the N molecules are then summed to generate the probability distribution of each type of Ag n L x L ′ n - x fragment using Eq.…”

“…STM, AFM, NMR spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy) are complex and not suited for the analysis of different time points in a reaction. Recently, mass spectrometry (MALDI‐TOF‐MS) has been developed as a rapid and relatively simple tool to investigate the morphology of the LS for gold and silver nanoparticles . The basic principle is based on a seminal idea presented in the work by Harkness et al .…”
