Theoretical Simulation and Experimental Investigation of a Rail Damper to Minimize Short‐Pitch Rail Corrugation

Abstract: The Cologne-egg fastening systems applied in metro lines, which can be subjected to rail corrugation, are considered in this paper. To understand the mechanism of the formation and development of rail corrugation, dynamic models of the wheel and the track with Cologne-egg fastening system in the frequency domain are developed to analyse the wheel and track vibration behaviour. A field test is also analysed to verify the validity of the mechanism. Using these experimental and theoretical results, the vibration … Show more

“…In [38], wheel-rail resonance was the leading cause of corrugation. In [39], the flexibility difference of the rail and sleeper caused rail corrugation. Correa et al used the corrugation growth as an index to analyze its development [40], and he noted that some resonance between the wheelset and track resulted in corrugation.…”

“…According to the investigations, these tracks supported by the Cologne egg fasteners, whether straight or curved, are suffering from the corrugation wear of rail, as are shown in Figure 1. The possible causes of the corrugation wear are as follows: the lateral pinned–pinned resonance (Zhao et al, 2017), the pronounced resonance of train/track dynamic interaction at certain frequencies (Zhang et al, 2014), and the friction-induced vibration (Cui et al, 2016). In terms of control measures, rail corrugation on the straight track can be eliminated by replacing the Cologne egg fasteners with the fastener system with higher support stiffness such as the DTVI2 fasteners.…”

“…Urban railway transportation alleviates the enormous traffic pressure brought by urbanization. 1 However, excessive vibration and noise from subways not only seriously affect the comfort of passengers and the normal life of people along the line, 2,3 but also cause fatigue damage to vehicles, tracks and surrounding buildings, 4,5 which shorten their service life. For the sake of controlling the vibration of the subway, various vibration reduction measures were applied during construction.…”
