Theories, Models, and Standard Systems of Measurement

Abstract: Measurement theories in psychology may be classified in terms of whether they begin from a general measurement framework or from a specific area of measurement. Points of contact between theories and different specific measurement areas have been limited by the choice of focus in discussions of general measurement theories and specific theories or models. This presentation outlines a metatheoretical framework that begins with the obvious common factor in all areas, the standard system of measurement. Just as a… Show more

“…Third, as Aftanas (1988) succinctly explains, the basic premise of measurement theory is that constructs are latent and we only see their effects in manifest behavior. Thus any situation, mechanism, or process that is arranged to denote (i.e., make manifest) a specific construct can and should be viewed as a standard system of measurement (SSM).…”

“…The view presented by the authors is noteworthy in that it suggests the importance of considering the mechanism of measurement in the process, and more specifically, the importance of considering the human judge as an assessment instrument. This idea reinforces the need for a general concept such as the term, standard system , in the measurement process (Aftanas, 1988, 2006), even though a concept is not identified as such in their original volume. Nonetheless, a number of commonalities associated with the system of assessment can be identified.…”

“…The legacy of the theory of scales, however, resulted in confusion and inconsistency about the specifics of psychological measurement. After reviewing some of the contributions in the research literature, a conciliation of the positive theory efforts of the past and the protocols for a measurement process are presented that is based upon the standard system of measurement (Aftanas, 1988, 2006) as the basic theoretically necessary element of measurement. The theoretical framework based on the standard system promises not only to integrate the components of measurement, and categories of psychological measurement that have been referenced in the past, but also to provide an easily assimilated protocol that can serve as a basis for future research and pedagogical exposition.…”

“…The boat fits the vector analogy, theoretically, as well. In theory, measurement, as stated by Stevens (1946) is 'the assignment of numerals to objects or events according to rules' (Aftanas, 1988;Stevens, 1946). The different sections with obvious mistakes in the 'vector manuscript' strictly fulfill the number of boats in the story stated above.…”
