Theory of multiphonon excitation in heavy-ion collisions

Abstract: We study the effects of channel coupling in the excitation dynamics of giant resonances in relativistic heavy ions collisions. For this purpose, we use a semiclassical approximation to the coupled-channels problem and separate the Coulomb and the nuclear parts of the coupling into their main multipole components. In order to assess the importance of multistep processes, we neglect the resonance widths and solve the set of coupled equations exactly. Finite widths are then considered. In this case, we handle the… Show more

“…As shown in Ref. [19], the coupling of the electric quadrupole (isovector and isoscalar) and the electric dipole states is very weak and can be neglected. We therefore include in our space only one-phonon 1 − and two-phonon [1 − i ⊗ 1 − i ′ ] J π (J π = 0 + , 1 + and 2 + ) states.…”

“…In Ref. [19] one obtained σ DGDR = 620 mb, 299 mb, and 199 mb for the centroid energies of E DGDR = 20 MeV, 24 MeV and 27 MeV, respectively. This shows that anharmonic effects can play a big role in the Coulomb excitation cross sections of the DGDR, depending on the size of the shift of E DGDR .…”

“…The role and interplay of these processes in multi-phonon excitation may be of interest in the physics of Giant Dipole Resonances (GDR) [46,47]. Although precise calculations with inclusion of the relevant microscopic physics of GDR are beyond the scope of this paper, we consider here the effect that the E2 process plays in the two phonon excitation probability We introduce a quadrupole coupling strength x which simply scales the quadrupole part of the perturbation Hamiltonian (2).…”

“…There exists a wide literature devoted to the use of relativistic Coulomb excitation for the study of several aspects of nuclear structure that cannot be explored through the nuclear interaction [2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. In recent years, this subject has been also shown to be relevant to the practical question of the stability of beams of relativistic heavy ions, since some of the processes which lead to loss of beam ions are initiated by Coulomb excitation [2,[9][10][11].…”
