Therapeutic Effects of Bilateral Anodal Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on Prefrontal and Motor Cortical Areas in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Pilot Study

Abstract: Dysfunctional frontal cortical areas associated with clinical features are observed in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study attempted to identify any potential therapeutic effects of bilateral anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) applied over the left and right prefrontal and motor areas on the clinical characteristics of children with ASD. Fifty children with confirmed ASD medical diagnoses were divided equally and randomly into a tDCS treatment group and a control group. … Show more

“…The Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist [ATEC, (28)] was used to measure the efficacy of PCBI. It has been successfully used to assess the effectiveness of treatments and progress after intervention in ASD (29)(30)(31). The ATEC is designed to be self-administered by parents and elicits parent concerns in four domains: speech/language/communication (14 items, scores range from 0 to 28), health/physical behavior (25 items, scores range from 0 to 75), sensory/cognitive awareness (18 items, scores range from 0 to 36), and sociability (20 items, scores range from 0 to 40) (32).…”

“…Most recently, Hadoush et al [ 42 ] studied the potential therapeutic effects of tDCS on the clinical characteristics of children with ASD. The tDCS treatment group underwent 10 sessions (1 mA, 20 min durations, five per week) of bilateral anodal tDCS stimulation applied simultaneously over the left and right prefrontal and motor areas (FC1 and FC2 of EEG system) and the cathode electrodes applied over the left and right supraorbital areas.…”
