Therapeutic Potential of Neoechinulins and Their Derivatives: An Overview of the Molecular Mechanisms Behind Pharmacological Activities

Abstract: Neoechinulins are diketopiperazine type indole alkaloids that demonstrate radical scavenging, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, anti-neurodegenerative, neurotrophic factor-like, anticancer, pro-apoptotic, and anti-apoptotic properties. An array of neoechinulins such as neoechinulins A-E, isoechinulins A-C, cryptoechunilin have been isolated from various fungal sources like Aspergillus sp., Xylaria euglossa, Eurotium cristatum, Microsporum sp., etc. Besides, neoechinulin derivatives or stereoisomers were also obtai… Show more

“…Phytochemicals are plant metabolites produced in response to any infectious attack or as a byproduct of any metabolic pathway, despite exerting beneficial effects in many ways [ 43 , 44 ]. The active chemical part of nettle includes nearly fifty compounds of the lipophilic and hydrophilic fractions and whose chemical structure is known.…”

“…Chemotherapy, lacking in specificity, is fundamentally based on the assumption that cancer cells have mitosis more frequently than normal cells, and for this reason, they can be more affected than healthy tissues [ 16 ]. However, this is not true for all cell types, thus, deriving the nonspecific toxicity of chemotherapeutic drugs for healthy tissues, characterized by cells with rapid proliferation rates, such as hair follicles, bone marrow, and gastrointestinal tract cells, generating the characteristic side effects of chemotherapy [ 17 ].…”

“…Therefore, it is difficult to synthesize a chemical-based drug that can distinguish between healthy and tumor cells effectively. Looking at the untoward effects of synthetic drugs, an upsurge, therefore, has been noted in the usage of plant-based drugs in developed and developing countries, mainly due to proven efficacy, safety, lesser side effects, accessibility, and acceptability [ 145 , 146 ].…”
