Therapeutic potential of octyl gallate isolated from fruits ofTerminalia bellericain streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats

Abstract: OG might have augmented the secretion of insulin by the modulation of cAMP and intracellular calcium levels in the β cells of the pancreas. Our findings indicate that OG isolated first time from the fruit rind of T. bellerica has potential antidiabetic effect as it augments insulin secretion and normalizes the altered biochemical parameters in experimental diabetic rat models.

“…However, at lower doses the effects of n-octyl gallate may not be necessarily harmful. n-Octyl gallate is able to lower blood sugar levels in diabetic rats [5], justifying the suggestion that this compound could be the antihyperglycemic principal part of T. bellerica. In addition, n-octyl gallate changed the levels of several plasma constituents including an increase in the circulating insulin levels.…”

“…In green tea, for example, the gallic acid moiety is one of the most common structures among its phenolic compounds, free gallic acid, and n ‐propyl gallate being particularly abundant . Methyl gallate and others are constituents of wine , and n ‐octyl gallate has been found in the medicinal plant Terminalia bellerica . Because of their antioxidant properties, several alkyl gallates, including n ‐propyl gallate and n ‐octyl gallate, have been added to foods (especially oils and fats), cosmetics, hair products, adhesives, and lubricants to prevent oxidation .…”

“…Where data are available, there is moderate evidence of endocrine disruption (a Group I end point) for many of these compounds. 104,110,111,120 There is also moderate evidence of skin sensitization, skin irritation, and/or eye irritation for most benzoate esters, based on both authoritative lists and computations. These hazard end points are of particular concern in home and personal care products, but are also of concern for workers who handle building materials or food packaging.…”

“…Antilipidemic drug in diabetes is effective in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease [3]. Recently, the search for appropriate hypoglycemic agents has been focused on plants used in traditional medicine [4]. Identification of natural products and its molecular mechanism by which it improves diabetic complications may open the new therapeutic target for the treatment of diabetes.…”
