Thermal environment and UV-B radiation indices in the Vojvodina region, Serbia

Abstract: We considered thermal environment and UV-B radiation indices in the Vojvodina region, Serbia. We derived an empirical formula for estimating the daily sum of the UV-B from global radiation and used this formula to reconstruct the UV-B radiation pattern for 1981-2008. We describe the actual climate conditions for the period 1992−2008. In addition, we applied a statistical downscaling technique on ECHAM5 outputs under the A2 scenario to assess the 2040 climate. The results indicate that a warmer and drier climat… Show more

“…In order to quantify the relationship between ERYand S, we performed a linear regression analysis between the relative daily erythemal UV dose (ERY/ERY 0 ) and relative daily sunshine duration (S/S 0 ). The UV reconstruction model used in this study is described in details in Malinovic et al (2006), MalinovicMilicevic and Mihailovic (2011) and Malinovic-Milicevic et al (2013) The NEOPLANTA parametric model computes the solar direct and diffuse UV irradiances on a horizontal surface under cloud free conditions for the wavelength range 280-400 nm with 1-nm resolution as well as the UVI. The effects of O 3 , SO 2 and NO 2 , aerosols and nine different ground surface types on the UV radiation are included.…”

“…The study restricted the UVI values on those for which the human body requires sun protection (higher than 3, according to WHO (2002)) and the amount of cloudiness is 6 tenths and less and showed a strong correlation (0.815) and small absolute value of the difference of standard deviations in the simulations and the observations (0.102). The first proposed equation (1) developed by Malinović-Milićević (2012) is used for the reconstruction of UV-B doses for seven places in Vojvodina region for the period 1981−2008 (Malinovic-Milicevic, Mihailovic, Lalic, & Dreskovic, 2013) and for the projection of the UV-B doses for the period 2021-2100 (Malinovic-Milicevic, Mihailovic, Drešković, et al, 2015). The reliability of the formula for estimating of the proposed daily doses of UV-B radiation reaching the Earth's surface is proved by a very strong Pearson correlation (0.96) and a small difference between standard deviations (3.7%) between the calculated and measured values.…”

“…We have used the model simulation to study the expected impact of climate change on UVR exposure of human skin for nine sites in VPS [PA (Palić), SO (Sombor), KI (Kikinda), NS (Novi Sad), BC (Bečej), ZR (Zrenjanin), SM (Sremska Mitrovica), BK (Bantaski Karlovac), and BG (Beograd)]. For calculating the daily doses of UVR (UVRD) in the study area sites, we have used the following empirical formula UVRD = 0.002507×G d −5.985 (kJ/ m2) derived by Malinović-Milićević et al [29], where G d is the daily sum of global solar radiation. First, we calculated UVRD from global radiation model outputs using the empirical formula for the nine sites for the period April-September, and then we found the relative change R(UVRD) of those doses as R(UVRD) = (UVRD-UVRD k )/ UVRD k where UVRD k is the dose for 1961-1990 reference period, while the UVRD is calculated for the period 2001-2030.…”
