“…The pattern of fluid flow both within and at the base of a glacier can be a complex THM process by itself. Problems associated with the mechanics of glaciers (Weertman, 1972;Marshall, 2005), the motion of glaciers (Fowler, 1981(Fowler, , 2011Morland, 1987;Picasso et al, 2004;Gomez et al, 2013;Stucki and Schlunegger, 2013;Ahlkrona et al, 2013;Thoma et al, 2014), the constitutive properties of ice and ice-rock interfaces (Picasso et al, 2004;Marshall, 2005;Headley et al, 2012;Tezaur et al, 2015), the contact with the bedrock and the evolution of their shapes (dell'Isola and Hutter, 1998;Picasso et al, 2004;Dietrich et al, 2010;Headley et al, 2012;Nielsen et al, 2012;Pollard and deConto, 2012;Gomez et al, 2013;Stucki and Schlunegger, 2013;Steffen et al, 2006;de Boer et al, 2014) have been studied. The glacier dynamics on a centennial timescale due to climatic warming was studied by Hambrey et al (2005).…”

“…In recent years, the coupled thermal–hydrological–mechanical (THM) behaviour in porous media has been a subject of great interest in many engineering disciplines, such as geothermal energy extraction, recovery of hydrocarbons, safety assessment of waste repositories for radioactive waste, and geological sequestration of CO 2 [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]. Based on Biot’s theory of the isothermal consolidation of elastic porous media, the phenomenological approach of poroelasticity [ 5 , 6 ], and the mixture theory as described by Morland [ 7 ] and Bowen [ 8 ], many coupled THM models and computer codes have been developed [ 3 , 9 , 10 , 11 ]. In particular, the framework of international projects like DECOVALEX (DEvelopment of COupled models and their VALidation against Experiments) [ 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 ], and the tunnel sealing experiment in the Underground Research Laboratory, Canada [ 16 ] has dramatically promoted the study of the THM coupling process [ 17 ].…”

“…Other mechanical and physical properties of the Stanstead granite are documented in the experimental studies presented in [102,103]. Table 1 provides typical results for the mineralogical composition of the Stanstead granite documented in [103][104][105][106]. Investigation of the permeability of the Stanstead granite was presented in [78,79,102].…”
