Thermo-Mechanical Properties of Glass Fiber Reinforced Shape Memory Polyurethane for Orthodontic Application

Abstract: The mechanical properties of GFRSMPU can be considerably improved by adding glass fibers, and the shape memory function would be well preserved too. Enhanced SMPU owns a good application prospect in orthodontics for dentation aligning on the preliminary stage, as well as other medical fields.

“…Among several methods that can evaluate the shape recovery effect of materials, the bending test was chosen to qualitatively investigate and directly visualize the property 39 , 41 . A U-shaped model was prepared to standardize the case in which a tooth deviates from the line of occlusion to the buccal side and a bending force is applied to the aligners.…”

“…They have also been a useful model for research in the field of orthodontics. Most recently, typodont models were used to test new bracket placement methods and new material for clear aligners [ 33 , 34 , 35 ]. Another study also used malocclusion typodont models to compare root movement measured by cone-beam computed tomography and consecutive digital scans [ 36 ].…”

“…The SMP archwires could supply sufficient contraction force and were more aesthetically pleasing than metallic ones. Since then, various orthodontic archwires made of SMPs were reported (Jung and Cho, 2010;Liu et al, 2017Liu et al, , 2018. For instance, Liu et al (2017) used SMPU as orthodontic archwire on a wax model for a tooth-moving simulation.…”

“…After incorporating 30 wt% short glass fibres into SMPU, the recovery force of the archwire was enhanced by 96%. For a tooth-moving simulation performed on identical typodont models, the dentition aligning time was decreased by 50% (Liu et al, 2018).…”
