Thermoeconomic Analysis of Biomethane Production Plants: A Dynamic Approach

Abstract: This work analyses the two most diffused technologies for biogas upgrading, namely water scrubbing and membrane separation. In order to carry out such analysis, these two technologies are coupled with photovoltaic panels and an electric energy storage system. The optimal water scrubbing renewable plant achieves a primary energy saving of 5.22 GWh/year and an operating cost saving of 488 k€/year, resulting in the best plant. It was compared to a reference system based on a cogenerator unit, directly supplied by… Show more

“…The electricity flows shown here regard a single plant with 4 digesters operating with the biogas upgrading unit and the liquefaction cycle. The load of the plant is almost constant due to the possibility of operation in rated conditions, as it is common for optimal management of these technologies [29]. The day shown in figure 4 is a summer day so the electricity demand is met by the PV for large part of the day -5 AM to 5 PM -with a remarkable fraction integrated with the battery in the other hours.…”

“…In fact, due to the different permeability of the gases, two different streams are obtained, one rich in CH4 (retentate) and one rich in CO2 (permeate) [28]. The detailed model of the system of equations describing the process is discussed in [29].…”

“…The exploitation of biomass as a renewable source is widely investigated in the literature [4]. In fact, biomass can be used to produce biogas by means of the anaerobic digestion process [5], and the biogas may be upgraded into biomethane and injected into the gas grid [6]. Furthermore, digestate is a by-product of the anaerobic digestion process which can be used as a fertilizer in agriculture [7].…”

“…The system was able to meet the user's demand. Cappiello et al [37] analyzed two technologies for biogas production coupled with PV panels and an ES system. The off-grid arrangement was designed for a sewage sludge treatment plant located in Stuttgart, Germany.…”
