Thermomechanical data of polyurethane shape memory polymer: Considering varying compositions

Abstract: This article presents data from the investigation of the thermal characteristics and mechanical behaviors of twelve different compositions of a polyurethane shape memory polymer (SMP). Each of the SMP compositions has a unique molar ratio of three monomers: (i) hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), (ii) N,N,N′,N′-Tetrakis(2-Hydroxypropyl)ethylenediamine (HPED), and (iii) Triethanolamine (TEA). The thermal characteristic datasets for each composition include the glass transition temperatures, as obtained from diffe… Show more

“…A similar behavior is shown from the plot of temperature, strain %, and load ( Figure 8 ) where it can be seen, while the load was constant for each cycle (0 to 0.9 N), the first cycle resulted in a higher deformation of the sample. This result is consistent with other thermomechanical tests of shape memory polymers [ 35 , 39 , 40 ]. While the shape recovery decreased and converged to a value with subsequent thermal cycles, the shape retention ratio remained constant with each thermal cycle.…”

“…Our previous studies on the thermomechanical properties of aliphatic polyurethane SMPs were performed for nonporous specimens. [ 25 ] Thus, we first used differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to determine how the sugar leaching and CNT infiltration processes influence the material's T g . The measured T g of the pristine sugar‐leached SMP foams was found to be significantly lower than the glass transition temperature of solid pristine SMPs (Mann–Whitney U ‐test: p=0.02, Figure a), together with the finding of a reduction in T g as the CNT/POR concentration increased (Figure 3b).…”

“…To address the current limitations of endovascular coil embolization, shape memory polymer (SMP) foams have arisen as a promising alternative owing to their tunable thermomechanical properties and their potential for the occlusion of patient‐specific aneurysm geometries. [ 24–30 ] Specifically, subject to temperature changes, polyurethane SMPs possess the ability to transition between different thermomechanical states. When heated above their glass transition temperature (Tnormalg), SMPs are deformed and cooled down into a programmable shape.…”

“…[35] Our findings in this modified protocol will be applied to the development of a novel coil-free endovascular device. We have developed a shape memory polymer (SMP) for endovascular embolization of patient-specific aneurysm geometries, [36][37][38][39] and we believe that this elastase-induced aneurysm formation protocol can aid in the translation of our material to the pre-clinical setting. We plan to test our material with a statistically powerful sample size, to determine the pre-clinical safety and effectiveness of our SMP device (measured using RROC scale, Fig.…”
