Thermomechanical performance and high Brunauer‐Emmett‐Teller surface area of poly(vinyl alcohol)/silica/clay and poly(vinyl alcohol)/(fumed silica)/clay nanocomposites

Abstract: Poly(vinyl alcohol)/silica/clay (PVA-si-clay) and poly(vinyl alcohol)/(fumed silica)/clay (PVA-fsi-clay) nanocomposites were prepared via solution intercalation by exploiting phase separation based on the bridging of particles by polymer chains. Both nanocomposites were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, adsorption isotherm (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller model [BET]), X-ray fluorescence, thermogravimetric analysis, and tensile testing. The Fourier-transform infrare… Show more

“…6,7 PVA as a polyhydroxyl compound is commonly prepared through vinyl acetate polymerization followed by alcoholysis. 8 In addition, the PVA polymer is a great host matrix that can be embedded with metals and organic nanoparticles (NPs) in order to attain specific chemical, physical, mechanical, electrical, and optical characteristics. 3,4 PVA contains alternate hydroxyl groups along the main chain that can be chemically modified for various purposes.…”

“…However, PVA is strongly hydrophilic and soluble in water because the hydroxyl ( OH) groups are located on alternating carbon atoms in its structure. [10,11] Montmorillonite (MMT) is the most commonly used clay mineral which has attracted great attention due to its remarkable improvement in mechanical, thermal, flameretardant, and barrier properties of polymeric composites with small amounts (1-10 wt%) of MMT fillers added. These property improvements are attributed to the nanometric thickness and high aspect ratio of the individual clay platelets, as well as to the nanocomposite morphology with the platelets being exfoliated and well-dispersed.…”
