Thin mini-LED backlight using reflective mirror dots with high luminance uniformity for mobile LCDs

Abstract: A new mini light-emitting diode (mini-LED) backlight with reflective dots is proposed for high luminance uniformity, high contrast ratio, and low power consumption for use in mobile liquid crystal displays. The proposed backlight, comprising a small number of mini-LEDs, was verified as having high luminance uniformity and high light use efficiency, due to the optimized reflective dots, backlight thickness and light distribution of the mini-LEDs. Moreover, the light leakage to adjacent segments was reduced by c… Show more

“…Common measures for this process include adding optical structures such as bank isolation [31] or lens collimation [32]. A specific approach is to cut slits in the LGP at the boundary of each dimming segment as shown in Figure 7 [33]. The addition of slits can effectively reduce the crosstalk between adjacent local dimming areas and suppress the halo effect.…”

“…In their research on module thinning, Ye et al proposed the use of mini-LEDs that incorporate multiple three-dimensional (3D) diffuse reflection cavity arrays to develop a design that enables thin backlight modules to achieve high uniformity and luminance [ 48 ]. Similarly, Kikuchi et al proposed a mini-LED backlight module with highly reflective mirror dots, which is a design that utilizes the structure of mirror dots and the slot between LEDs to improve uniformity and suppress the halo effect; although the thickness of the module was successfully reduced, its light extraction efficiency was only 58.8% [ 49 ]. In conclusion, few studies have examined extra-thin, large-area, high-luminance, and high-uniformity properties.…”

“…Although these two designs can achieve large-area light sources, they cannot achieve a thin, high-luminance, flat light source. Sho et al proposed a thin mini-LEDs backlight using reflective mirror dots to obtain high luminance uniformity for mobile LCDs [47].…”
