Third generation (3G) mobile communications systems

Abstract: The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) began studies on globalization of personal communications in 1986 and identified long term spectrum needs for future "ThirdGeneration" mobile wireless telecommunications systems. These 3G mobile telecommunications systems are expected to provide worldwide access and global roaming for a wide range of services. This paper describes the proposed 3G air interfaces of Europe, Japan, and North America. This paper highlights ETSI activities in 3G arena and provides a b… Show more

“…Next was the introduction of 3G (third generation) mobile networks in the early 2000s, which marked a significant advancement in mobile technology, providing both voice and data services [ 18 ]. These networks offered elevated data transfer speeds and the capability of web browsing on mobile devices.…”

“…In wired networks, Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) [10] is one of the technologies aiming at this goal. As for wireless networks, we also have witnessed the current mobile communication systems, e.g., Generalized Packet Radio Service (GPRS) [5] and the future mobile communication systems, e.g., the third generation (3G) system [6] (or even in the beyond 3G (B3G) system [14] or in the fourth generation (4G) system [12]) offer integrated services to satisfy diverse requirements of different users who want to run multimedia applications on their own handsets.…”
