Three-body dN interaction in the analysis of the 12C(,d′) reaction at 270 MeV

Abstract: We have measured the cross sections and analyzing powers A y and A yy for the elastic and inelastic scattering of deuterons from the 0 + (g.s.), 2 + (4.44 MeV), 3 − (9.64 MeV), 1 + (12.71 MeV), and 2 − (18.3 MeV) states in 12 C at an incident energy of 270MeV. The data are compared with microscopic distorted-wave impulse approximation calculations where the projectile-nucleon effective interaction is taken from the three-nucleon t-matrix given by rigorous Faddeev calculations presently available at intermediat… Show more

“…This method of normalizing the acceptance-corrected deuteron carbon data resulted in cross sections that are in agreement with published cross section by Kawabata et al for 200 MeV [5] and by Satou et al for 270 MeV [6] at the 10% level as can be seen in Figure 3b. The results for all seven energies are given in Figure 3a.…”

“…As the magnitude of the polarization of the beam P y was unknown, the asymmetry for 200 MeV and 270 MeV was fitted to published reference vector analyzing powers ( [5] and [6]) to obtain the beam polarization values. The line shape of the measured asymmetry is in good agreement with the published data (see Figure 2a).…”

“…The polarimeter efficiency and the average analyzing power used for the sensitivity calculation were 2% and 0.36, respectively, for the deuteron case ( Table I). The numbers are for the elastic d-C reaction (exclusive reaction) measured at the deuteron energy of 270 MeV (p ¼ 1042 MeV=c) [35]. The analyzing power is a function of the particle energy, and one should avoid the energies that have small analyzing powers.…”

“…Four consecutive EDDA rings were included in the ''polarimeter group,'' extending the sensitive angle range to 21.5 . Over this angle range the vector analyzing power for the elastic scattering of deuterons from carbon is positive and passes through the first interference maximum [12], making this an excellent range for operation as a polarimeter. The energy loss through the target material, beam pipe, and an absorbing tube removed much unwanted flux, especially protons from deuteron breakup.…”
