Three‐dimensional evaluation of tooth preparation forms in paediatric zirconia crowns: An in vitro study

Abstract

With growing aesthetic desires among paediatric patients and their guardians, the availability of prefabricated zirconia crowns (PZCs) has helped dental practitioners meet the aesthetic needs of the patient. PZCs have established their excellence in aesthetics and biocompatibility. 1,2 Previous clinical studies have shown that PZCs have reliable long-term retention. 3,4 PZCs are, however, highly stiff and require a passive fit for complete seating. 5 Unlike stainless steel crowns (SSCs), PZCs cannot be contoured, crimped, or trimmed to achieve a tight marginal seal and mechanical retention. 3,6 Thus, these properties can create challenges in the adaptation of PZCs and necessitate more aggressive tooth preparation. 7,8 Due to the differences in the properties between SSCs and PZCs, different guidelines are adopted to obtain optimal crown adaptation.
