Three-dimensional finite analysis of acetabular contact pressure and contact area during normal walking

Abstract: The zones of increased contact pressure and the distributions of acetabular contact areas had important significance towards clinical researches, and could indicate the inductive factors of acetabular osteoarthritis.

“…Tests are performed using two different sliding conditions, as indicated in Table 1. Both continuously and intermittently loaded areas are present in a joint during a full gait cycle (Wang et al, 2017), and therefore stroke lengths of 3 mm and 7 mm are chosen to represent this physiological condition: part of the contact will be continuously loaded for a 3 mm stroke length and be migrating for a 7 mm stroke length. The graphic summary in the table illustrates these different contact configurations.…”

“…Following the CT(computed tomography) scan ( Figure 3a) before segmentation of the acetabular cup (AC) from the pelvis to obtain the two-dimensional (2D) CT images of AC, the 2D data and Mimics 16.0 software (Materialise Inc., Leuven, Belgium) is used to rebuild the three-dimensional (3D) model of the AC (see the procedure in [46]). After we constructed the 3D AC in Figure 4a, two different unit cells size were taken for generating AC cellular implant used with a vintiles lattice topology.…”

“…The distal femur was completely fixed, while the acetabulum and the articular cartilage were partially fixed, with movement limited to vertical movement in the coronal plane. The contact force of the hip joint under these conditions was approximately 3 times that of the mass of the body i.e., for a body mass of 70 kg, the size of load forced on the acetabulum was 2100 N. 13 The load direction was located in the OXZ plane through the center of the femoral head, and the CE angle was set according to the CE angle of the hip joint model. The finite element model of the total hip was established in this study in order to verify the mathematical model for contact stress in the articular surface of the hip joint.…”
