Three Dimensions of Design for Sustainable Behaviour

Abstract: Designing products to be more sustainable is crucial if the UK is to meet the challenge of its ambitious new carbon reductions targets by 2050. How designers, manufacturers and service providers conceptualise behaviour is key to understanding how there will be widespread adoption of new products. The research area referred to as Design for Sustainable Behaviour has emerged to explore measures of reducing environmental impact through moderating the way people use products, services and systems. To date, though,… Show more

“…The selection of product feature, for a particular profile of material simplifiers, is the responsibility of the designer. We are facing the same question as Shin and Bull (2019) when defining their eight design spaces in the framework of Design for Sustainable Behavior. After the delineation of the user profile, the designers must select a specific feature or a combination of features to implement into the product.…”

“…The principles of product sustainability evaluation used in this work are listed as follows: economic competitiveness, environmental friendliness, and social desirability [19]. The product sustainability evaluation should not only consider the negative impact on the environment but also focus on several dimensions such as economic aspects and social issues [14,15].…”
