Through the Interface - a Human Activity Approach to User Interface Design

Abstract:
This dissertation discusses human-computer interaction, and the role of user interfaces in use and design from the point-of-view of human activity theory. Human-computer interaction conducted in purposeful human work is in focus. The main idea is that a computer application, from the user's perspective, is not something that the user operates on but something that the user operates through on other objects or subjects.

The contents of the report is the following: Danish Summary; Intr… Show more

“…We believe that even a virtual model of an object may serve as objectification of mental activity if it can be handled (Bødker, 1991). Which kind of virtuality is still perceived as exteriorization rather than disconnected outer world -or "just one more environment" (Kaptelinin, 1996, p. 64) -is an empirical ques-tion.…”

“…We draw on Bødker's (1991) and Kaptelinin's (1996) work as a basis for our design process. While we do not consider aspects of human consciousness and emotionality in human development, we note the possible connection between these aspects and human-computer interaction (Nardi, 1996b).…”

“…The latter has made it a strong candidate for HCI research too (c.f. Bødker, 1991;Nardi, 1996). Third, Activity Theory provides a systemic and contextual understanding of collaborative activities within a social practice and environment.…”

“…Many HCI theorists and researchers identify issues of "context" as putting a 69 strain on the traditional theories of HCI (Bodker, 1990;Dourish, 2004; Gay and 70 Hembrooke, 2004;Nardi, 1995). As Nardi puts it, "we are beginning to feel a the-71 oretical pinch, however -a sense that cognitive science is too restrictive a para-72 digm for finding out what we would like to know" (Nardi, 1995, p. 13).…”
