Thymic Carcinoma: 30 Cases at a Single Institution

Abstract: Resectability was the only prognostic factor in thymic carcinoma. We suggest the importance of preoperative precise evaluation to exclude unresectable Masaoka stage IVb disease and expect preoperative chemotherapy or chemoradiotherapy to improve the respectability.

“…It is noteworthy that we could detect a mediastinal liposarcoma, which is known as a disease with a poor prognosis 22) at the early stage and this led to surgical resection. On the contrary, chest radiography did not contribute to the early detection of malignant tumors in the present study despite resectability being the important prognostic factor in thoracic malignancies [23][24][25][26] . It is known that mediastinal tumors occur less frequently than lung tumors, and more than 80% of these tumors are benign histologic types 23,27) .…”

It is known that mediastinal tumors occur less frequently than lung tumors, and more than 80% of these tumors are benign histologic types 23,27) . However, in our knowledge, the epidemiological studies of mediastinal tumors in health check-up have seldom reported and precise incidence of this tumor is still obscure.…”

“…During followup, ct imaging showed a persistent partial response in the irradiated fields ( Figure 2). The thymic lesion shrank to 52.2 cm 3 from 173.3 cm 3 , and the right pleural lesion shrank to 3.6 cm 3 from 4.8 cm 3 . However, disease progression in the nonirradiated pleura was noted.…”

“…Thymic carcinoma is a rare mediastinal neoplasm, differing clinically from thymoma by its aggressiveness and frequent metastasis [1][2][3] . Most patients with thymic carcinoma are diagnosed with locally advanced or metastatic disease and have a median overall survival of 2 years 4 .…”

“…Thymic carcinomas are rare invasive neoplasms, and their clinical course tends to be more aggressive than that of thymomas (1)(2)(3). The World Health Organization has established a thymic epithelial tumor classification criteria, according to which, neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) is classified as a subtype of thymic carcinoma, and LCNEC is classified under thymic NEC as a pulmonary neuroendocrine tumor (4).…”
