Timber, Minerals, and Social Change: An Exploratory Test of Two Resource‐Dependent Communities1

Abstract: There are few empirical tests of the relationship between local resource production and community social systems. This paper reports the results of research on two communities in northern Idaho: one timber‐dependent, the other mining‐dependent. Data were collected for 13 indicators of resource production and 15 indicators of social change for periods up to 65 years. Regression analysis was used to test if community social change is associated with the production level of local resource systems. The final model… Show more

“…Research examining industrial restructuring in these kinds of logging communities provides insights for understanding such events and their impacts in mining resource communities. This potential for crossover is further illustrated by a number of comparative studies examining both timber and mining resource communities (Lucas, 1971;Machlis et al, 1990;Reed, 1995).…”

“…Furthering the concept of dependency, resource dependency relates to communities and individuals whose social order, livelihood and stability are directly linked to their resource production and localized economy (Machlis et al 1990). Adger (2000) states the promotion of specialization in economic activities has negative consequences in terms of risk for individuals within communities and for communities themselves.…”
