Time-continuous Kerr electro-optic field mapping measurement under impulse voltage using array photodetector

Abstract: Space charge affects the electric field distribution in high voltage-stressed liquid dielectrics and can cause insulation degradation. This letter reports on research using a Kerr electro-optic measurement system with an array photodetector for Kerr electro-optic field mapping measurements in propylene carbonate under application of switching impulse voltages to investigate the electric field and space charge effects in high voltage-stressed liquid dielectrics. The electric field distribution between parallel … Show more

“…Furthermore, the is relatively significant for its high Kerr constant. In our previous works, [10][11][12][13][14] Kerr electro-optic measurement method is applied to investigate the space charge behaviors in liquid dielectrics such as propylene carbonate and transformer oil. Based on the space charge measurement results, the physical mechanism of space charge's effect on the breakdown process of liquid dielectrics is presented.…”

“…Applying the theory of ion migration and introducing the equation of thermal diffusion, O'Sullivan modeled and analyzed the charge transfer process in liquid dielectric [7]. Drawing the finding from precious researches and based on the electric field measurement results in propylene carbonate, Sima et al established charge injection and migration model based on the theory of electric double layer [8]. Qi et al explored the polarity effect of the positive and negative charge accumulation at the oil-paper insulation interface through measuring the distribution of electric field under DC voltage, AC-DC combined voltage and polarity reversal voltage, and pointed out the limitations of the widely-used Resistive-Capacitive model (RC model) [9]- [11].…”

“…Moreover, repetitive impulses can result in the accumulation of space charge if the interval time is not long enough. An array photodetector (APD) with high sensitivity is introduced in the measurement by our group to overcome these drawbacks [6,7]. Owing to the high time-resolution advantages of APD, we can obtain space charge distribution under a single impulse voltage and the random error and accumulative error are effectively avoided.…”
