Time Course of Splenic Cytokine mRNA and Hormones during a Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Inflammation in Toads

Abstract: Inflammation comprises alterations in glucocorticoids (in amphibians, corticosterone - CORT) and melatonin (MEL) levels, two hormones with immunomodulatory effects on cytokine production in several vertebrates. Cytokines mediate inflammation progress differently depending on their function. While some are secreted during the acute phase of the immune response, others prevail during the resolution phase. Major efforts have been made to understand the interaction of endocrine mediators and cytokine production in… Show more

“…Then again, the spleen exhibited more discrepancies between groups, where https://doi.org/10.1017/S0007114522004068 Published online by Cambridge University Press Accepted manuscript MyD88, IL-1β, and IL-6 gene expressions all increased with LPS. In fact, the liver and spleen convey pro-inflammatory cytokine expression at different rates; while hepatic reactions are faster and shorter, the splenic ones are slower and more consistent (80).…”

“…predator attacks and agonistic interaction with conspecifics may naturally result in skin wounds). In anurans, inflammation is associated with increase of CORT, melatonin plasma levels and several cytokines evidencing the relevancy of immune–endocrine relationships in this group [30]. Therefore, we expect that CORT treatment would modulate the wound healing process [31,32].…”
