Time for carbon neutrality and other emission reduction measures at European airports

Abstract: Since 2009, one out of five European airports participate in carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction programmes, although only 8% of them are certified as CO2 neutral. This study aims to examine empirically internal as well as external factors of importance for airport participation in emission reduction programmes at different levels of involvement. Estimates of the Cox proportional hazard model based on almost 600 airports for the period 2009 to 2017 reveal that the likelihood and timing of participation increase wit… Show more

“…In second place is Lufthansa which reportedly produced 30.3 Mt CO 2 emissions in 2017 and carried 142 million passengers in 2018. It has been estimated that since 2009, only one out of five airports in Europe actually participated in the reduction programmes of CO 2 ; however, only around 8% have been certified to be CO 2 neutral [ 51 ].…”

“…Much has already been written about short-term effects of COVID-19 on tourism and projections about long-term implications (e.g. Gössling et al 2020;Hall et al 2020;Falk and Hagsten 2020;Sigala 2020). However, the situation around the COVID-19 pandemic's emergence and persistence has the potential to highlight some of the existing tourism-related environmental challenges in the marine and coastal environment beyond the pandemic.…”

“…The relentless development of globalization has generated a surge in the demand for transport, making the sustainable development of aviation industry increasingly urgent (Hinnen et al, 2017;Kleiner, 2007;Lassen, 2010). Environmental problems (e.g., noise and air pollution) associated with aviation industry are unfolding (Cui et al, 2018;Falk & Hagsten, 2020;Mahashabde et al, 2011). The proportion of people who are hospitalized urgently or die for cardiovascular disease increases by 3.5% on average when airport noise increases by ten decibels (Correia et al, 2013).…”
