Time-series panel analysis (TSPA): Multivariate modeling of temporal associations in psychotherapy process.

Abstract: Objective: Processes occurring in the course of psychotherapy are characterized by the simple fact that they unfold in time and that the multiple factors engaged in change processes vary highly between individuals (idiographic phenomena). Previous research, however, has neglected the temporal perspective by its traditional focus on static phenomena, which were mainly assessed at the group level (nomothetic phenomena). To support a temporal approach, the authors introduce Time Series Panel Analysis (TSPA), a st… Show more

“…Another approach is to examine the carryover or degree of transfer (or persistence) of positive emotions or adaptive responses (Höhn et al, 2013) or upwards spirals of positive emotion and cognitions (Garland et al, 2015), using multilevel and autoregressive latent trajectory modeling analyses. Time-series panel analysis (TSPA; Ramseyer, Kupper, Caspar, Znoj, & Tschacher, 2014) also can be used to examine session-to-session change in multiple variables and to analyze patterns of change and temporal feedback loops, which could be particularly useful for modeling positive growth.…”

“…Early measurements of SMC, through the synchrony field, involved either intensive behavioral coding 26 or behavioral ratings 27 or explicitly manipulating study conditions to promote a narrow definition of synchrony, such as a dyad bouncing or swinging at the same time to a beat. 11,28 Mathematical applications to applied sciences now allow researchers to quantify SMC using both linear (cross-correlations) 5,22,[29][30][31] and nonlinear (i.e., coherence, relative phase, and cross-wavelet analyses) 1,2,6,32 approaches using a variety of different methods for capturing movement activity, including motion sensors, 9 accelerometers, 33,34 and musical instrument digital interface (MIDI)/audio recordings (e.g., to capture moments of contact during a drum hit). 15,35 SMC has also been measured through the timeseries analysis of movement obtained from the frame-difference method (FDM), 29,36,37 which measures the difference in luminance of grayscale pixels between consecutive video frames.…”

“…The FDM allows for broader patterns of coordination (e.g., it can capture whole-body movement versus kinematics of a specific limb), is less time-consuming, is objective, and provides information that is equivalent or more robust than behavioral coding. 6 Such methods have been used more extensively in the past few years to measure synchrony in adults, including typically developing adults, 6,31,32,38 adults with mood disorders, 5,30 and adults with schizophrenia. 22,29 Compared with using motion sensors and accelerometers, a benefit of the FDM approach is that it simply requires video recording, and participants do not need to wear or make contact with any type of sensor or recorder.…”

“…Another limitation was the use of baseline severity as an indication of causality within cross-lagged analyses. While this approach to time-sequencing is recommended (Maxwell et al, 2011) and has been utilized in the psychotherapy literature (Ramseyer et al, 2014;Falkenstr€ om et al, 2017) more frequent assessment of the psychological variables and clinical outcomes throughout treatment would enable greater detail and clarity about the process of treatment-related change (e.g. Terides et al, 2018).…”
