Timing and location of spawning of Blue Grenadier, Macruronus novaezelandiae (Teleostei: Merlucciidae), In Australian Coastal Waters

Abstract: The geographical distribution and ages of larvae of the blue grenadier, Macruronus novaezelandiae, based on ichthyoplankton surveys in southern Australian waters in 1984 and 1985, indicate that the species spawns primarily off the west coast of Tasmania in winter, and may spawn on a lunar cycle. Winter spawning off Tasmania is also suggested by adult gonad morphology: gonado-somatic indices peaked in winter, and mature and spent individuals were collected off the west coast of Tasmania. Small numbers of larval… Show more

“…The spawning period of hoki generally runs from the end of June to mid September (Langley 1993) although spawning behaviour can be affected by water temperature. In a warmer year off Tasmania, the spawning season of hoki was delayed by 2 weeks compared with a cooler year (Gunn et al 1989). The SOI in autumn seemed to be more important than during winter.…”

“…Then the samples of the central portion of the gonads of 0.5 cm thickness were put into the cassettes separately for histological examination. They were dehydrated in graded alcohol series, embedded in paraffin, sectioned for 5-7 μm in thickness using a microtome (MICROM HM355S, Germany) and stained with Haematoxylin and Eosin, then mounted in DPX mountant and photographed with an OLYMPUS-CX41 microscope which was equipped with the SONY DSC-W220 camera (Gunn et al 1989). At least two glass slides were prepared for each ovary or testis.…”

“…The gonads were removed by abdominal dissection and weighed to the nearest gram. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) was obtained according to the equation: GSI = GW/ (TW-GW) x 100, where: GW = gonad weight, and TW = total body weight (Gunn et al 1989). Then the gonad samples were preserved in 10 % buffered formalin and kept at room temperature.…”
