Yogyakarta, Indonesia, is a very fast developing area. The Yogyakarta historical time is divided into Pre-Old Mataram Era (1 st -8 th century), Old Mataram Era (8 th -12 th century), and Young Mataram Era (since 16 th century). Geology has recorded many intermittent natural disasters within those historical time: volcanism, earthquakes, and rock movements as well. Those natural disasters have caused lots of damages, shown by buried and collapsed old buildings. Larger volcanic eruptions were known to occur once in 50 -150 years ago, which were mostly followed by lahars as far as 32 km from the crater of Merapi Volcano, of which the last eruption was in 2010. Earthquakes were identified based on bumpy foundations that particularly occurred in the first pile of temple stones, i.e. at the temples of Kedulan, Plaosan, Morangan, Gampingan, and Boko Palace. Surface fractures are also present on the base of the palace floors. During 18 th -21 st century, larger earthquakes with magnitude of 5 -8 Richter scale occurred once in 20 -70 years, of which the last earthquake was in 2006. A geological study clarified that there was a marine volcanism during the Tertiary with radial normal faults. The normal faults have been potential to reactivate since Plio-Pleistocene untill now, shown by surface deformations at Sudimoro Hills with a mass movement occurence as happened in

The parts of Yogyakarta-Bawen Toll Road Indonesia, based on the geological agency’s liquefaction susceptibility map are located on moderately susceptible to liquefaction soil. This map can be a preliminary indication of liquefaction as it can roughly indicate liquefaction potential. However, it cannot illustrate the actual condition in detail as its inputs are macro parameters (geological and seismicity factors). The existence of silty sand and sand, earthquake sources, and shallow groundwater increase the liquefaction possibility to occur in this important national project. Therefore, the Liquefaction Severity Index (LSI) and the Liquefaction Potential Index (LPI) using Sonmez’s and Iwasaki’s analysis methods are conducted with peak ground acceleration (PGA) of 0.322 g for the first section and in the second section 0.298 g. The results of the three types of analysis have relatively similar trends but the differences are in each category. The LSI’s categories are very low-moderate in the observed location, meanwhile, the LPI’s categories are low-very high.

Scarcity of groundwater can cause conflicts between hoteliers and the surrounding community, because hotels use a lot of ground water. Researchers are interested in reviewing the use of groundwater in hotels, the results can be used as a reference for managing water use. This research was conducted in Yogyakarta by taking samples at two hotels, namely GIM and NSY , four-star standard hotels with 222 rooms and 206 rooms. The data comes from 210 respondents for the GIM hotel and 202 respondents for the NSY hotel, besides that it comes from interviews and questionnaires for hotel managers and staff. The findings on water use are that the average volume of water use per person per day for the NSY hotel is more (316 liters) than the GIM hotel (280 liters). There is a very strong correlation between shower/bathhub use and the total volume of water use r = 0.893 for the GIM hotel and r = 0.980 for the NSY hotel. There is a negative correlation between frequency and duration of shower use, which means that the more often you use the shower, the shorter the duration. Water use by gender, women use 61% more water than male guests 39% for GIM hotels while 64% women and 36% men for NSY hotels. This finding can be used as a reference for managing groundwater use through regulations so as not to cause conflict with the surrounding community and as part of realizing an environmentally friendly green economy.
