Abstract. Remote management is essential for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) designed to run perpetually using harvested energy. A natural division of function for managing WSNs is to employ both an in-band data plane to sense, store, process, and forward data, and an out-of-band management plane to remotely control each node and its sensors. This paper presents SRCP, a Simple Remote Control Protocol that forms the core of an out-of-band management plane for WSNs. SRCP is motivated by our target environment: a perpetual deployment of high-power, aggressively duty-cycled nodes capable of handling high-bandwidth sensor data from multiple sensors. The protocol runs on low-power always-on control processors using harvested energy, distills an essential set of primitives, and uses them to control a suite of existing management functions on more powerful main nodes. We demonstrate SRCP's utility by presenting a case study that (i) uses it to control a broad spectrum of management functions and (ii) quantifies its efficacy and performance.

Abstract-Environmental energy is becoming a feasible alternative for many low-power systems, such as wireless sensor nodes. Designing an environmentally powered device faces several challenges: choosing the exact type of the energy harvester, the energy storage elements and determining the duty cycle of the application. With harvesting, the design process becomes even more difficult because it also has to take into account the unpredictability of the energy source.The contribution of this paper is a methodology that facilitates the analysis of energy harvesting nodes. The existing modeling strategies for battery powered systems are not suitable because they do not capture the uncertainty of the power source. Also, the metrics of interest for battery powered devices are different, as opposed to the harvesting powered ones: in the former case we search to maximize the system lifetime, while in the latter case a more expressive goal is to increase the system availability.

Abstract-A wireless sensor platform for use in ultralow-power wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is presented. The proposed round sensor (RoSe) node is physically robust, is resistant to humidity, and has a housing that can be in direct contact with food. These characteristics are achieved via injection molding technology which is investigated at both the component and the system levels. The results of injection molding tests on the node's electronic components are reported, while a housing-integrated overmolded antenna is conceived and realized. The radiator, operating in the subgigahertz industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band (ISM 868 or 915 MHz), has been characterized, and a good correspondence with theoretical predictions is observed. The proposed system enables industrialized mass production and results in a generic platform for wireless monitoring applications. In this paper, we present the RoSe node with a temperature sensor for use in food cold chain management, i.e., for use at temperatures down to −30• C and in frequent contact with water due to condensation or cleaning. Its ultralow-power characteristics are demonstrated by the analysis of the charge consumption when the node performs specific tasks both in a test case and operating in a WSN. Long-term battery lifetime results while running a demo WSN are also presented.Index Terms-Food compatibility, long battery autonomy, overmolded antenna, subgigahertz robust wireless sensor platform, temperature monitoring, ultralow-power consumption, wireless sensor networks (WSNs).
