Tissue Sodium Content is Elevated in the Skin and Subcutaneous Adipose Tissue in Women with Lipedema

Abstract: Objective To test the hypothesis that tissue sodium and adipose content are elevated in patients with lipedema; if confirmed, this could establish precedence for tissue sodium and adipose content representing a discriminatory biomarker for lipedema. Methods Participants with lipedema (n=10) and control (n=11) volunteers matched for biological sex, age, body-mass-index, and calf circumference were scanned noninvasively with 3.0T sodium and conventional proton MRI. Standardized tissue sodium content was quanti… Show more

“…So fiel in einer Studie eine Erhöhung des Natriumgehalts der Haut bei Lipödem-Patientinnen auf. Die Autoren schreiben dazu: "Skin sodium accumalation is an ermerging hallmark of inflammatory diseases" [17]. Eine 2019 publizierte Untersuchung bestätigte diese inflammatorischen Prozesse im Fettgewebe.…”

“…Although our picture of Na + homeostasis and tissue storage is still fragmented, this novel approach has made it possible to gain a considerable amount of knowledge in recent years. Tissue Na + content was previously found to be elevated, among others, in patients with lipoedema [22], acute heart failure [11] or acute kidney disease [12] and chronic kidney disease [13]. In patients with refractory hypertension, women showed increased skin Na + content compared to controls, whereas men showed higher muscle Na + content compared to controls [9].…”
