Titanium diffusion coatings on austenitic steel obtained by the pack cementation method

Abstract: The surface of specimens made of 316L austenitic steel was modified by titanium diffusion. The diffusion coatings were obtained by packing in a powder mixture consisting of titanium powder, NH 4 Cl and Al 2 O 3 powder. The procedure required high temperatures, over 900 °C, and long durations. Atomic titanium was formed in the muffle during the process. Titanium atoms from the metallic part surfaces diffuse towards the interior and a diffusion layer is formed as a function of the steel composition. Titanium dif… Show more

“…The difference between the microhardness values in the outer and respectively, inner layers for two samples is due to the different compounds formed during the process of diffusion with reaction. In the case of titanized sample, the compound formed in the outer layer was TiN [10], while in the inner layer Ti 2 Ni and TiN compounds were identified.…”

“…Prior to obtaining the enamelled layers, samples were thermochemically treated by titanizing by pack cementation procedure. The pack cementation procedure with obtaining of Ti diffusion coatings was described in detail elsewhere [22][23][24]. This procedure consists in packing 316L austenitic stainless steel samples in a powder mixture.…”

“…If in the case of titanium substrates biovitroceramic coatings obtained by an enameling procedure ensured adherent coatings, the same procedure applied on 316L austenitic steel did not produce coatings with the desired adherence. Keeping the biovitroceramic composition unchanged, we tried to modify the metallic substrate surface by titanium diffusion coatings [12] and titanium plus aluminium simultaneous diffusion coatings.…”
