Dubbed "the successor to the mobile Internet", the concept of the Metaverse has grown in popularity. While there exist lite versions of the Metaverse today, they are still far from realizing the full vision of an immersive, embodied, and interoperable Metaverse. Without addressing the issues of implementation from the communication and networking, as well as computation perspectives, the Metaverse is difficult to succeed the Internet, especially in terms of its accessibility to billions of users today. In this survey, we focus on the edge-enabled Metaverse to realize its ultimate vision. We first provide readers with a succinct tutorial of the Metaverse, an introduction to the architecture, as well as current developments. To enable the ubiquitous, seamless, and embodied access to the Metaverse, we discuss the communication and networking challenges and survey cutting-edge solutions and concepts that leverage next-generation communication systems for users to be telepresent and teleoperate in the Metaverse. Moreover, given the high computation costs required, e.g., to render immersive 3D worlds and run data hungry artificial intelligence (AI) driven applications, we discuss the computation challenges and cloud-edge-end computation framework driven solutions to realize the Metaverse on resource-constrained edge devices. Next, we explore how blockchain technologies can aid in the interoperable development of the Metaverse, not just in terms of empowering the economic circulation of virtual usergenerated contents, but also to manage physical edge resources in a decentralized, transparent, and tamper-proof manner. Finally, we discuss the future research directions towards realizing the true vision of the edge-enabled Metaverse.

The IEEE 802.3ca Task Force group has recently approved the standardization of nextgeneration Ethernet passive optical network (NG-EPON) to satisfy future bandwidth demands. NG-EPON architecture classifies the optical network unit (ONU) transmission to allows simultaneous Wavelength-Agile (WA-PON) transmission which increases the network capacity (50 Gb/s) and flexibility. The recently introduced 5G services and related functional standards, new capabilities and Quality of Service (QoS) are imposed in the optical transport network. The Peer-to-peer (P2P) based live streaming application is the most popular multimedia application in access networks i.e., Facebook Live, YouTube Live, Twitch and other streaming, as well as video conferencing services are increasing especially in situations of global epidemics, so which requires a higher QoS. Therefore, media-based applications require adequate infrastructure resources to meet customer demands such as high bandwidth, low latency, high quality audiovisual, live streaming and services. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an SDN enhanced P2P virtual reality (VR) 360 ° live video streaming application NG-EPON multicast architecture based on 5G-enabled tactile internet (TI) and aims to improve the QoS, QoE and provide flexible services to the end-users. Finally, we proposed an SDN based TI-dynamic wavelength and bandwidth allocation (SD-TI-DWBA) mechanism. Simulation results show that our proposed architecture can improve the system performance and QoS metrics in terms of packet delay, jitter, system throughput, and packet loss.

Tactile Internet based Cyber-Physical Systems (TCPS) are highly sensitive to component and communication latencies and packet drops. Building a high performing TCPS, thus, necessitates experimenting with different hardware, algorithms, access technologies, and communication protocols. To facilitate such experiments, we have developed TCPSbed, a modular testbed for TCPS. TCPSbed facilitates the integration of different components, both real and simulated, to realize different TCPS applications and evaluate their latency and control performances. TCPSbed's latency analyzer tool employs a novel method to isolate latencies of individual TCPS components such as the latencies contributed by actuation, sensing, algorithms, and by the network, all in an online fashion. TCPSbed's method of analyzing stability is also novel. It involves the use of the step response analysis method, a classic control-theoretic method used for analyzing the stability of generic control systems. TCPSbed's support for edge intelligence modules enables prediction of command and feedback signals at the network's edge allowing TCPS applications to perform well in adverse network conditions. TCPSbed's source-code, made available through our GitHub page TactileInternet, allows developers to extend its features and functionalities further. In this paper, we describe the architecture and implementation details of TCPSbed and demonstrate its features through several proof-of-concept experiments.
