TLC analysis of some phenolic compounds in kombucha beverage

Abstract: Black and green tea contains a wide range of natural phenolic compounds Flavanoids and their glycosides, catechins and the products of their condensation, and phenolic acids are the most important. Kombucha beverage is obtained by fermentation of tea fungus on black or green tea sweetened with sucrose. The aim of this paper was to investigate the composition of some phenolic compounds, catechin, epicatechin, quercetin, myricetin, gallic and tanic acid, and monitoring of their status during tea fungus fermentat… Show more

“…The following six different solvent systems were used as developing systems: hexane:ethyl acetate:methanol (5:3:2); benzene:methanol (45:55); chloroform:methanol:acetic acid:water (5:4:0.2:1); 1-butanol:acetic acid:water (4:1:5); petroleum ether:chloroform:methanol for terpenoids; and chloroform:ethyl acetate:formic acid for flavonoids. 5 , 6 The plates were air dried and visualized by spraying with vanillin–sulfuric acid spray followed by heating for 5 minutes at 110°C for detection of steroids and triterpenoids. 7 Flavonoids were detected under ultraviolet rays at 365 nm.…”

“…Efficient detection and rapid characterization of natural products play an important role as an analytical support in the work of natural products chemists. Existing methods for the analysis of phenolic compounds involved high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) (Weisz et al, 2009;Proestos et al, 2005), thin layer chromatography (TLC) (Malbaša et al, 2004), capillary electrophoresis (CE) (Hinneburg et al, 2004;Peng et al, 2005), and gas chromatography (GC) (Du et al, 2009). Among several chromatographic methods, HPLC is the most widely used technique for both qualitative and quantitative analysis of phytochemical substance.…”
