TLC Screening for Antioxidant Activity of Extracts from Fifteen Bamboo Species and Identification of Antioxidant Flavone Glycosides from Leaves of Bambusa. textilis McClure

Abstract: Interest in the antioxidant activity of bamboo leaves is growing. To discover new sources of natural antioxidants, a TLC bioautography method combined with a new image processing method was developed to evaluate the antioxidant activity of leaf extracts from 15 different species of bamboo. The results showed that the methanolic extract of Bambusa. textilis McClure possessed the highest antioxidant activity among the selected bamboo species. To rapidly identify the antioxidant compounds, the crude extract of B.… Show more

“…Glucoraphanin, precursor of the most active antioxidant glucosinolate found in broccoli, was assessed as the prevalent compound: 14.06 to 24.17  µ mol/g [116]. HPLC chromatographic assay of the methanolic extract of Bambusa textilis McClure indicated active antiradical fractions, as presented in Figure 1 [87]. …”

“…An aliquot of aqueous solution of the nine medicinal herbs studies (40 μL) was directly deposited (as spots or bands) onto silica gel 60F254 TLC plates (Merck, Germany) (20). TLC plates were developed to a distance of 75 mm, in a 20 cm 20 cm glass flat-bottom chamber after equilibration with mobile phase vapor for 30 min with ethyl acetateformic acid-acetic acid-water (100:11:11:26) as developing reagents.…”

“…This method prescribed on which concentration prepared showed highest intensity of white spot capacity on the TLC plate. It was an eye-detected semiquantitatively rapid screening method and only based on the inhibition of the accumulation of oxidized products [21] and the white colour represented the nature of radical scavenger presented in selected concentration of extract [12].…”
