TNF-α, IL-6 and hsCRP in patients with melancholic, atypical and anxious depression: an antibody array analysis related to somatic symptoms

Abstract: BackgroundThe association between inflammation and major depressive disorder (MDD) remains poorly understood, given the heterogeneity of patients with MDD.AimsWe investigated inflammatory markers, such as interleukin (IL)-6, high-sensitivity C reactive protein (hsCRP) and tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in melancholic, atypical and anxious depression and explored whether baseline inflammatory protein levels could indicate prognosis.MethodsThe sample consisted of participants (aged 18–55 years) from a previous… Show more

“…By using literature-based analysis, we explored potential mechanisms underlying the connection between MDD and COVID-19. Notably, the SARS-CoV-2 virus is capable of causing a cytokine storm, with the same primary players as in the neuroinflammatory phenotype seen in patients with MDD, such as tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-6 37 38. In particular, IL-6 induces a variety of acute-phase proteins and worsens the inflammatory response, and its high expression increases mucus production and aggravates disease in patients with COVID-19 39.…”

“…Moreover, BDNF polymorphisms are associated with the antidepressant efficacy of ketamine in depressed patients [ 24 ]. TNF-α and IL-6 are inflammatory indicators and are strongly correlated with postoperative depression [ 26 ].…”

“… 49 50 Patients in remission from atypical depressive symptoms had lower levels of TNF-α and IL-6 compared with those with no remission. 51 However, well-conducted, large-scale trials with long follow-up on anti-inflammatory drugs are still unavailable, although numerous small studies have tested anti-inflammatory drugs in addition to conventional therapy for anxiety, depression and a variety of other conditions. Nevertheless, meta-analyses have suggested benefits for mental disorders with anti-inflammatory drugs.…”
