Today's protected areas: supporting a more sustainable future for humanity

Abstract: Nature provides significant benefits to people, especially those living in and around protected areas. Ecosystem services from protected areas include producing wild food, supporting biodiversity and water cycles, regulating climate, and providing cultural services like better health, tourism, and legacy for future generations. In economic terms, the flows of ecosystem services provided by protected areas are worth hundreds of billions of dollars each year, well justifying the costs of managing these sites, bu… Show more

“…Water scarcity is a major constraint to the survival of wildlife in the area. Consequently, natural water sources and artificially transported water sources are the main solutions to the wildlife drinking water problem in nature reserves [17]. At present, there are two main types of storage for manmade water sources-namely, earthen pond storage and concrete pond storage.…”

“…Simultaneously, there is a national initiative to increase the number of designated protected areas in China (10 pilot national parks were added in 2017; Wang 2019). Given the important of PAs and global hotspots for conserving multidimensional biodiversity, it is vital to integrate ecotourism in a harmonious way (McNeely 2020).…”

“…Species Distribution Models (SDMs) are invaluable tools for predicting the potential distribution of species in both current and future environmental conditions [ 35 , 36 ]. SDMs have been widely used to predict shifts in the ranges of endangered species under climate change and to inform ecosystem management strategies [ 37 , 38 , 39 ].…”
