Toponym mapping: a case for distribution of ethnic groups and landscape features in Guangdong, China

Abstract: Toponyms serve as symbols of regional culture and thus reflect the history, habitat and environment of a place. This study aims to (1) visualize the distributions of the four ethnic groups and landscape features in Guangdong of China using a toponym mapping method, of which results were presented at 1:6,400,000 scale and (2) to explore the changes by comparing contemporary data, of which results were presented at 1:3,200,000 scale. These maps provide a toponymic aspect to explore the historical evolution of et… Show more

“…The use of toponym information in several studies reflects ethnic characteristics and changes in topography and land use. The principal component analysis (PCA) method is used to determine the past racial groups, using population data from the current dialects of contemporary ethnic groups, trend surface analysis, spatial clustering, and study of the minority populations using Kriging interpolation migration, as well as the historical evolution of the local landscape characteristics [17]. Previous scholars have studied the distribution and the structure of the Manchu eight banners for the major ethnic groups in Northeast China, while county-level toponyms are divided into those from Manchu and those from Manchu autonomous region, and the geographical distribution of each group and the spatial pattern of toponyms of Manchu, Mongol, and Han were divided by kernel density estimation [2].…”

“…The data was entered into the analysis in the form of a matrix of Euclidean distances obtained from ArcGIS: the nearest neighbour method was used for this analysis, as it gradually clusters the points with the closest distances. The authors' focus of interest, after the clusters had been created, was whether the relative representation of the individual place names (the place names relating to extinct ponds comprised one category) in the clusters was similar Derungs and Purves, 2016;Luo et al, 2000;Qian et al, 2016;Wang et al, 2006;Wang et al, 2014). The methods of the Floating Catchment Area (FCA) with the search window set at 10 km and a Kernel density for the set of place names outside of the "NA" category were used.…”

“…Generally, toponymic research has focused on using toponyms to interpret land use changes, reconstruct historical land use, and analyze traditional practices [6,19,20], on constructing a database of historical and contemporary toponyms based on a genealogy GIS [21], on using toponyms to reveal climate changes [22], on analyzing the spatial distribution features of toponyms based on GIS, containing rural toponyms, dialectic toponyms, and ethnic minority language toponyms [23][24][25][26], on utilizing GIS technology to analyze toponymic landscapes [7,[27][28][29]. As a kind of "living heritages", toponyms storing data of local cultures and languages can act as a proxy for past situations and supply insight into the heritages of a certain region [6,23,[30][31][32][33][34].…”
