Torsional Resonance - An Understanding Based on Field and Laboratory Tests with Latest Generation Point-the-Bit Rotary Steerable System

Abstract: Torsional dynamics can be extremely damaging to downhole drilling tools and can significantly affect drilling efficiency. Industry focus on combating this has led to the development of various downhole mitigation tools, improved bit technologies, BHA designs and better management of drilling parameters. The aforementioned focus primarily on combating stick-slip, or at least the conventional form of it, with its distinctive stick and slip phases. This paper outlines two lesser known types of tors… Show more

“…Lines et al (2013) developed a unique algorithm for detecting the torsional vibration mode and severity and displaying this information in a succinct manner. The TDI algorithm rapidly displayed the BHA conditions to the directional driller, who preferred operating with the torsional vibration mitigation system because it reduced the vibrations experienced by the MWD package.…”

“…The relationships between drilling parameters with the ROP and drillstring vibration were obtained. Lines et al 114 conducted laboratory tests to gain insight into the downhole data and characterize the stick-slip vibration of the rotary steerable system. Based on a simple test-rig for analyzing drilling dynsmic, Real et al 115 explained the stick-slip cycles.…”

“…Different BHA whirl types have been identified with transverse bending-moment sensors and transverse magnetometers (Close et al 1988;Shyu 1989;Vandiver et al 1990;Macpherson et al 2001). Other researchers have used two sets of accelerometers in an RSS to detect and quantify collar/stabilizer whirl (Minett-Smith et al 2010).…”
