Torsional vibration analysis of the gear transmission system of high-speed trains with wheel defects

Abstract: The gear transmission system of a high-speed train is the key component, which delivers the traction torque from the motor to the wheelset. It couples with the vehicle system via the suspension system, gear meshing and the wheel–rail interface. The dynamic performance of the transmission system directly affects the operational reliability or even the running safety of high-speed trains. In this study, the effects of wheel polygonalisation and wheel flat on the dynamic responses of the transmission system are i… Show more

“…However, they neglected the influence of the gear transmission system. Wang et al [60][61][62] performed numerous simulations to investigate the effects of wheel defects, such as polygonisation and flat, on the dynamic performance and fatigue reliability of the gearbox housing. They developed a powerful numerical model that included the vehicle-track coupled dynamics, flexibility of the wheelset and gearbox, and gear transmission system.…”

“…Meanwhile, the influence of polygonal wear upon static and dynamic imbalances, using a dynamic model based on flexible deformation of the wheelset was invested by Meinke [9]. Zhiwei Wang [10,11] studied the dynamic performance of a gearbox housing under the effect of wheel polygonal wear. Xingwen Wu [12,13] investigated the effects of polygonal wear and wheel flats on the wheelset using a coupled vehicle-track dynamics model including a flexible wheelset.…”

“…In practice, the TRBs of the axle-box interact dynamically with the connected components of high-speed trains. Some authors realised that it is important to couple the vehicle and track together due to the intensified wheel-rail interactions as the train's running speed increases [22,23], especially if wheel defects occur [11,12]. Moreover, the vibration of vehicle components is significantly influenced by wheel polygonal wear and likewise the life of the bearing is directly related to its dynamic load environment [24].…”

“…The similar concept has been adopted in many studies of railway dynamics [18][19][20]. Besides, the poor wheel conditions contribute to the enhancement of wheel-rail interactions and cause the vehicle-track components fatigue failure [21,22]. Although many researchers focused on understanding railway vehicles and the dynamics performance of TRBs, the coupling effects between them are yet to be considered.…”
