Abstract: In this essay, Richard Smith observes that being a parent, like so much else in our late-modern world, is required to become ever more efficient and effective, and is increasingly monitored by the agencies of the state, often with good reason given the many recorded instances of child abuse and cruelty. However, Smith goes on to argue, this begins to cast being a parent as a matter of "parenting," a technological deployment of skills and techniques, with the loss of older, more spontaneous and intuitive relati… Show more

“…In examining parental efficacy, the importance of proper and timely parental involvement, engagement, and childhood development is emphasized, as opposed to participation that can be considered a lower level of parental involvement in child development. Also, proper involvement of parents does not include "performativity" (Smith, 2010, p. 357) which can be considered as obsession with effectiveness (Smith, 2010).…”

“…Considering the fact that child rearing is multi-determined (Belsky, 1984;Bronfenbrenner, 1978, quoted in Bennett & Grimley, 2001, it cannot be argued that the effects of child development are solely determined by effective parental activity (Ramaekers & Suissa, 2012;Smith, 2010). But understanding the determinants and differentiating those that a parent can influence from those they cannot, can contribute to the development of personal competencies and resources that parents need in order to expand their life roles, as well as parental and family roles (Gorgievski & Hobfoll, 2008;Gradney & Cropanzano, 1999).…”

“…Results should be valued and regarded in the light of previous research, in order to circumvent reiteration and triviality. Many scholars have contributed with important perspectives on late modern parenting practices (Clarke, ; Gambles, ; Pain, ; Reece, ; Smeyers, ; Smith, ; Young, ). Ramaekers and Suissa () made a solid analysis of late modern parenting.…”

“…11 Cline i Fay pretjeranu roditeljsku brigu dočaravaju metaforom helikopter roditelj s ciljem opisivanja roditelja koji bdiju nad svojom djecom rješavajući sve njihove probleme (Cline i Fay, 1990). Takve pedocentrične koncepcije izražavaju se primjerice u pedagoškoj literaturi i kroz over-parenting (Bernstein i Triger, 2011), total parenting (Smith, 2010), paranoid parenting (Furedi, 2008). 12 Procesu redefiniranja uloge oca i majke danas sve više doprinosi činjenica da brigu oko djece i dalje većinom snosi žena i majka.…”
