Toward a Grounded Theory of Apparel Product Quality

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to explore definitional ambiguity of apparel product quality from the perspectives of apparel producers. “…First the questionnaire items were quantified in order to collate responses into categories of concepts (Strauss and Corbin, 1990) for qualitative analysis. Analysis is based on the grounded theory; an analytic procedure in which qualitative research data are conceptualised and built into an explanatory theory that sensitively integrates and represents reality (Strauss and Corbin, 1990; Scheller and Kunz, 1998; Glaser, 1978). The grounded theory (Glaser and Strauss, 1967) involves the study of the phenomenon it represents and is discovered, developed and provisionally verified through systematic data collection and analysis (Strauss and Corbin, 1990; Glaser, 1992).…”

“…As discussed in many studies, aesthetics cues, such as style, shape and fashionability, are essential in quality assessment (e.g. De Klerk and Lubbe, 2008; Fiore and Damhorst, 1992; Lennon and Fairhurst, 1994; Scheller and Kunz, 1998; Swinker and Hines, 2006). As De Klerk and Lubbe (2008) comment, aesthetic qualities of garments may appear so significant that they may overshadow functional needs.…”

“…Shubhapriya and Byoungho (2012) proposed a conceptual framework for implementing quality apparel retail store attributes using an integrated method of Kano’s model and the quality function deployment approach, which ensures customer satisfaction. Schellar and Kunz (1998) have explored definitional ambiguity of apparel product quality from the perspective of apparel producers. Quality represented value that was portrayed through three major constructs: structural integrity, aesthetic presence, and the power of appeal.…”
