Toward a Mini‐theory of the Blamer Softening Event: Tracking the Moment‐by‐moment Process

Abstract: In this article we present the results of a discovery-oriented task analysis research study identifying specific therapist behaviors that facilitate softening events in emotionally focused therapy (EFT) for couples. Therapy sessions conducted by an expert EFT therapist were examined. Six therapist content theme shifts were identified and specific interventions were delineated within each using an EFT coding scheme (EFT-CS) created for this study. This study extends the theoretical understanding of the softenin… Show more

“…The results of this process of change study echo an earlier study (Bradley & Furrow, 2004) that allowed for more detailed mapping of the softening change event in EFT (Bradley & Johnson, 2005) that predicts successful outcome. Deepening of emotional experience and specific kinds of affiliative disclosing interactions in key sessions were consistently associated with the completion of change events and positive outcome in EFT.…”

“…Interventions used to initiate and complete the injury‐specific softening process were similar to those found in the general EFT model (Bradley & Furrow, 2004). In Steps 3 and 4 in the AIRM, the EFT therapist implemented a wide range of interventions to de‐escalate the injury‐specific cycle and begin to access primary vulnerable emotions.…”

“…The blamer-softening process has been delineated into content themes and distinct interventions in a process research study (Bradley & Furrow, 2004, 2007. It seems clear that the therapist needs to fully process the more-blaming partner's fears and anxieties associated with reaching to the other for attachment needs to be met.…”
