Toward a really temporalized theory of event: A Luhmannian critique and reconstruction of Sewell’s logics of history

Abstract: In recent discussions about event as the foundation of historical research, it is William H Sewell Jr who has developed the most comprehensive version. However, Sewell’s theory of the event is not adequately articulated and is even one-sidedly dominated by his theory of structure. He did not take the problem of self-reference (and therefore circular causality) seriously enough, with the consequence that his emphasis on eventful temporality and contingency could not be carried through to the end. This article a… Show more

“… 4. Luhmann (1976, 1981, 1995, 2005) never provided a systematic or comprehensive account of his theory of time; his thoughts on the subject are scattered throughout his work. For useful discussions of Luhmann’s conception of time, see Nassehi (1993), Baraldi, Corsi, and Esposito (1997, 214-17), Tang (2013), and Tada (2019). The following argument draws on Gehring’s (2007) reading of Luhmann’s theory of time and Wolff’s (2021) extension of her interpretation in a case study of the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. …”

“…Ti uvjeti dugo nisu dopuštali sustavno uključivanje u modernu svjetsku ekonomiju, a to je ostavilo traga na daljnje faze razvoja. To je ograničenje na tragu jedne važne zamjerke i Sewellu i Mahoneyju, koji ne razrađuju dovoljno skokove natrag u povijest (Tang, 2013), kao što je povratak Hrvatske na stari položaj u svjetskoj podjeli rada.…”

“…Dakako, u vremenima manje opterećenim povijesnim događajima do većeg izražaja dolazi djelovanje hrvatskih upravljačkih i ekonomskih elita. Ipak i tu treba uzeti u obzir to da je njihova struktura i djelovanje pod utjecajem povijesnih događaja, napose različitih prevrata koji su tijekom cijeloga 20. stoljeća rezultirali odbacivanjem nepodobnih elita i nemogućnošću promišljanja ekonomskog razvoja, a taj proces može indicirati i određeni cirkularni kauzalitet (Tang, 2013). Primjerice, elita ponajprije opterećena stjecanjem hrvatske nezavisnosti i međunarodnog priznanja omogućila je koruptivnu privatizaciju i zanemarivala pozicioniranje hrvatskih poduzeća u novim svjetskim tokovima.…”

“…According to Steinmetz (2005), path theories as well as 'eventful sociology' implicitly advocate a two-level model: social reality consists of a supporting layer, characterised by fixed structures where incidents reproduce structures again and again, and, based on this, a layer of contingent events as turning points that transform structures leading to new structures (see Tang 2013). In connection with 'eventful sociology', the motto of younger historical sociology is finally extended: 'taking temporality seriously' (Büthe 2002; see also Aminzade 1991;Griffin 1992, Schützeichel 2004Baur 2005).…”
