Toward the European 2030 CO2 target with gasoline compression ignition technology and 48 V mild electric hybrid

Abstract: The pressure to reduce CO2 and criteria pollutants of internal combustion engines (ICE) powered vehicles is higher than ever. The existing gasoline and diesel engine vehicles face a critical challenge to adjust to these stringent demands. By combining a clean fuel like gasoline with a high efficiency thermodynamic cycle (compression ignition), it is possible to create a powertrain that is clean both globally and locally thus breaking the historical trade-off between decreasing CO2 and reducing criteria polluta… Show more

“…The methanol-hydrogen engine test bench setup is depicted in Figure 2. A self-designed methanol dissociating device (1) was connected in series with the engine's (3) exhaust pipe (2). The engine's hightemperature exhaust flowed through the heat exchange pipes inside the methanol dissociating device and the heat was transferred to the reactor chamber.…”

“…However, due to the extensive consumption of fossil fuels and the subsequent emissions, there's a burgeoning desire for vehicles that are both cleaner and more efficient. 1,2 Among the various types of electric vehicles (EVs), Extended-Range Electric vehicles (EREVs) run on electric power at all times just like Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs). 3 But EREVs have a longer driving range because they have a range extender (REX) which typically consists of an engine and a generator.…”

“…The hybridization and electrification of powertrains has proved to an effective solution to tackle the pollutant problem to automobile sector in recent years. 4,5 However, in some scenarios like in the case of heavy-duty applications including construction, agriculture, mining, shipping etc. the full electrification is not a viable option.…”

“…[6][7][8] Consequently, the newly introduced regulations have required vehicles to achieve higher fuel economy. 9 This is pushing manufacturers to improve not only the powertrain and fuel efficiency, 10,11 but also working on other components and systems in the vehicle. 12 Powertrain electrification has been seen as a key solution in fleet decarbonisation with the development of Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) and Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs).…”
