Towards A Social Identity For Europe? A Social Psychological Approach to European Identity Studies

Abstract: Unlike traditionally nationalistic, cultural, and ethnic approaches to the discussions over European identity, this paper makes use of Henri Tajfel's Social Identity Theory, and more specifically social identity, in order to have a more coherent and theoretically healthier approach to the concept. Borrowing from Tajfel, it is asserted that even without sharing a common culture, a common history, or a common set of traditions, values and aspirations, Europeans might form ingroups which may temporarily make them… Show more

“…A democratic system, the direct participation of the citizens, and complete transparency in the functioning of the EU helped it to grow and expand. There has also been an effort on the part of the European policy makers to create regional consciousness and regional identity (Ongur 2010). “…Идея формирования европейской идентичности как наднациональной идентичности продолжала обсуждаться рядом авторов и в начале второго тысячелетия. Здесь мы можем упомянуть теории таких ученых как Р. Онгур [Ongur, 2010], развивающих идею европейской идентичности как одной из многих социальных идентичностей, которые люди формируют на основе своей принадлежности к разным социальным группам. Они также утверждают, что различные формы идентичности (такие как европейская, национальная, региональная) не обязательно конкурируют друг с другом.…”

“…The concept of Europeanization first appeared in the 1980s in political studies literature and achieved greater recognition in the 1990s, particularly in the field of European studies, although it does not have a single, clear-cut definition (Klatt, 2014;Ongur, 2010;Tabaldi & Calaresu, 2013). One of the most cited definitions of Europeanization is offered by Radaelli (2004), who says, Europeanization consists of processes of (a) construction, (b) diffusion, and (c) institutionalization of formal and informal rules, procedures, policy paradigms, styles, "ways of doing things," and shared beliefs and norms, which are first defined and consolidated in the EU policy process and then incorporated in the logic of domestic (national and subnational) discourse, political structures, and public policies.…”
