Towards a Universal Methodology for Performance Evaluation of Electrical Impedance Tomography Systems using Full Reference SNR

Abstract: This paper describes a simple and reproducible methodology towards a universal figure-of-merit (FoM) for evaluating the performance of electrical impedance tomography (EIT) systems using reconstructed images. Based on objective fullreferencing and signal-to-noise ratio, the method provides a visually distinguishable hot-map and two new FoM factors, to address the issues where common electrical parameters are not directly related to the quality of EIT images. The paper describes the method with simulation resul… Show more

“…For example, in [18] , a 300 uA sinusoidal current at a frequency of 40 kHz was used; while in [17] , [20] , frequencies were 200 kHz and 40 kHz, respectively. In [22] , [23] , a 4 mA current signal with a frequency of 125 kHz was used. In [24] , the amplitude of the sinusoidal current was 3 mA and the frequency took the values 50 kHz, 100 kHz, 250 kHz, 500 kHz and 1 MHz [25] shows that the BIM system based on the AD5933 achieves the best performance for a current of 1 mA at a frequency of 50 kHz.…”

“…As discussed in [94], there should be development of universal guidelines specifying how EIT information could be incorporated in diagnostic and therapeutic plans for different conditions [8]. In addition, technical steps such as technology standardization [95], provision of commercial EIT microchips, and employment of artificial intelligence in algorithms to improve image resolution should be considered for future EIT devices.…”

“…The paper builds on [14] by refining the evaluation metrics and further investigating how different design specifications can impact the image results. It also compares active and passive systems demonstrating the superiority of the former in terms of robustness against noise interference.…”
