Towards an Areal Typology of Prefixal Perfectivization

Abstract: This paper presents the results of an areal-typological study of prefixal perfectivization in Slavic, Baltic, Yiddish, Hungarian, Ossetic and Kartvelian languages based on a uniform set of morphological and functional-semantic parameters. It is shown that there are two clusters of prefixal perfectivization, i.e., Slavic and Kartvelian, while other languages display significant degrees of difference both from each other and from the two clusters. It is further argued on the basis of existing evidence that the d… Show more

“…Preverbs play an important role in the aspectual system both in Slavic and Baltic, by being able to perfectivize verbs; see Arkadiev (2014Arkadiev ( , 2017 and Benacchio et al (2017) for a broader context. Despite general similarities between Slavic and Baltic aspectual systems, one can safely say that the aspect in Slavic is more grammaticalized than in Baltic (Holvoet 2001;Wiemer 2001;Arkadiev 2011).…”

“…Verbal prefixation in Livonian is also a subject in a few typologi cal studies. Arkadiev (2014) and 2015are arealtypological studies of prefixal perfectivization. Arkadiev (2014) mentions Livonian as an example of a language without native prefixes that has borrowed prefixes and their functions, including imperfective and perfective as pectual opposition, as a result of intensive language contact.…”

Arkadiev (2015) aims to describe aspectual systems based on verbal prefixes by distinguishing typologically considerable features and to find areal features and possible correlations in these features, for example in the degree of grammaticalization of aspectual categories.…”
