This paper explores the integration of tactile feedback into children's electronic books (e-books) through variable friction surface haptics enabled by the TPaD Tablet technology. Through a user study with 10 pairs of children and their parents, we examine how children and parents conceive of and add haptics to a popular e-book. We report conceptual and practical differences in the ways in which children of various ages (3-8 years old) and adults envision haptic feedback within an e-book and conclude with a discussion of design considerations for creating haptic e-books.

This work in progress paper describes a proof-ofconcept that explores the question: "Can users retain more information by incrementing their reading engagement physiologically?" This may help users to better learn the material even when it is uninteresting. Further, this paper explains how using Brain-Computer Interfaces can be used to measure/capture the engagement levels of a user while he or she is performing a task, in this case reading. Also this explores, how beneficial it may be for reading engagement physiologically to deliver the best reading experience.

The BooksOnline Workshop series aims to foster the discussion and exchange of research ideas and initiatives addressing challenges and exploring opportunities around large collections of digital or digitized books and complementary media. The fourth workshop in the series, BooksOnline'11 1 called for special attention to the role of social media and the phenomena of crowdsourcing in the context of online books, which are expected to be key in defining new user experiences in digital libraries and on the Web. The workshop boasted a high quality program, including keynote addresses by Ville Miettinnen, CEO of Microtask and Adam Farquhar, Head of Digital Library Technology at The British Library. From the accepted papers, two main themes became salient: 1) The role of relationships among authors, communities and books, and 2) Reading experiences and behaviours. This paper provides a summary of the workshop, its accepted contributions and the subsequent plenary discussion.
